PIN ME UP AND DOWN - ODE TO A CLASSIC

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 6 - 27, 2010 -  Do you you remember Farah Faucet pinned to your wall, making your heart race, your palms sweat and your mind wander between her breasts, while your hand wandered beneath the sheets. What about Marilyn Monroe, Betty Page, or Dita Von Teese? Did Carmen Electra or Cindy Crawford stare down at you while you fall asleep?  The pin-up represents desire, strength and power -  a symbolic art form that has lasted for generations.  Femina Potens is happy to titillate the bay-area with our latest Visual Art exhibit 'Pin me up and Down' An ode to the classic pin-up girl.

Artists Nancy Peach, Jenny Wehrt and Lucy Peterson grace the walls of Femina Potens with their contemporary view of  pin-up art.  Look deep into the eyes of  women in Peach'spaintings, as they feed our lusty hearts with their erotic and goddess-like poses.  Wehrt puts a modern spin on an iconic American staple, creating vibrant pop-portraits of famous pinups that celebrate every curve.  Inspired by images from the covers of pulp and sleaze paperbacks, Peterson hand stitches her “100 Ladies” collection of needlepoint pin-ups.  This exhibition is a tribute to vampish feminine power from Betty Page to Dita Von Tesse.

Nancy Peach was born in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1958 and has been fortunate enough to live in California since 1980. She studied Fine Art Oil Painting and Illustration at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California . Her career has spanned over 35 years as a professional Architectural Illustrator, Children's Book Illustrator and Muralist with over 50 Children's Book covers to date. Nancy is currently represented by Femina Potens Gallery, FP Edge Artist Network in San Francisco.  The Gallery mainly represents the LGBTQ and female erotic artists. I have been presented in shows at OneTaste Urban Retreat Center, The Center for Sex and Culture, Mr. S. Leather, Madam S. Leather, Tom of Finland Foundation, The Erotic Signature Show, Art Undressed Tour, The Exotic Erotic Art Expo, Erospulse Exhibit, Erosfest NW Art Exhibit, Good Vibrations Gallery, Excessorize and also Minna Gallery. Presently Nancy is involved in producing the Art Undressed Tour in partnership with the Erotic Signature Show.

San Francisco-based artist Jenny Wehrt specializes in original and custom pop-portraiture, choosing subjects that pick up where Andy Warhol left off. Her post-pop subjects are often inspired by heroes of the rock underground such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Robert Smith, Iggy Pop, Ian Curtis, Morrissey and Jarvis Cocker. Ms. Wehrt departs from traditional pop painting in her depiction of underground subjects in the pop medium, thereby adding further facets of irony. “Andy Warhol,” says Jenny “was interested in automation, fame and commercialization. I’m interested in the cultural underbelly. Paris Hilton simply doesn’t interest me as a subject.” Wehrt’s body of work also includes hundreds of custom portraits of her clientele, effectively erasing a “high” and “low” art divide between Art and Home Décor.  A full time artist, Jenny’s pieces have been displayed throughout the city at numerous group and solo shows. In addition to a client base in San Francisco, Wehrt regularly sells pieces to international buyers in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, France and Canada. She holds degrees in Visual Communication from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), as well as a Bachelor’s in Business Marketing from San Francisco State University.

Lucy Peterson works as a clothing designer and seamstress in Olympia, Washington.  She’s moved around a bit (Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, Hannover Germany) and tried her hand at a variety of vocations: publishing her first novel in 1993, working at an art gallery, teaching college English & writing from 1999 to 2008, and starting her own clothing label (HissyFit) in 2002. When she’s not stitching, Lucy likes to get dirty in her garden, read sleazy pulp fiction, bake vegan pies, (punk)rock out to her friends’ bands, get tattooed, lend a hand at her local needle-exchange & street-outreach program, play the drums, and get crafty. She firmly believes that practicing traditional crafts is key to encouraging a more environmentally-sustainable and locally-based culture, that the “domestic arts” (read: feminine, labor-intensive, under-valued) should be seen not as frivolous icing-on-the-capitalist-cake but, rather, as personally therapeutic and socially progressive means to change ourselves (our values, our lifestyles, our stereotypes, and our politics) and make the world around us a bit less homogenized, fearful, and rapacious.  “Craftiness” is Lucy’s ideological and career aspiration. In addition to the “100 Ladies” series, Lucy has produced scads of wearable art and unheimlich-décor pieces.  She’s currently working on a mixed-media collection of “dudes” and a clandestine project that involves making clothes for geoducks.
